DESY to Coordinate New €18.4 Million European Programme in Ultrafast Science

DESY will lead LEAPS ULTRAFAST, a new European research and training programme aimed at educating the next generation of scientists in ultrafast science a field that explores how matter behaves on extremely short time scales. Funded through the European Commission’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), the programme has a total budget of €18.4 million.

LEAPS ULTRAFAST brings together eight leading research institutions across Europe, including world-class light-source facilities such as synchrotrons and free-electron lasers. These powerful tools allow researchers to observe and control processes occurring in trillionths of a second, enabling breakthroughs in areas ranging from materials science and chemistry to energy and health research.

Over the next five years, the programme will offer postdoctoral fellowships in six European countries. Fellows will conduct cutting-edge research while benefiting from structured training, mentoring, and career development support, preparing them for leadership roles in academia, industry, and emerging technology sectors.

By combining Europe’s strongest photon-science expertise under the LEAPS network, LEAPS ULTRAFAST strengthens Europe’s position at the forefront of ultrafast research. The first call for postdoctoral applications will open later this year.
